#121 1762, 2 grosha antiquarian forgery, Petrov pp.35,37; Raman p.38; Dvinyaninov p.30, In 1968 Jess Peters asked Randolph Zander to advise him on a coin he was not aware of. It was 1762 2 groshen coin and was submitted to Peters to auction off. The coin in its original envelope together with letter of Zander’s reply and dated November 15, 1968 envelope are attached with this lot. Accurately diagnosed, this antiquarian fantasy wasn’t ever listed in any professional numismatic publication; however 4 pricelists at the beginning of 20th century by private Russian numismatic merchants do offer this coin. Looking at the chronology of publications it is easy to find a culprit who very likely ordered this fantasy made. Not many will be surprised that that dealer turns out to be Petrov. He was the first who offered this coin as genuine in his list of coins for sale from his store in Moscow first dated 1899, page 35 and 37, where he was offering this coin for 150 roubles!!! He also offered it in following issue of 1900. That coin was also offered in 1901 by M.V. Lubomudrov, a dealer in St. Petersburg, in1904 by A.A. Raman, a dealer in Riga for 150 roubles and then in 1913 by S. Dvinyaninov, a dealer in Kazan for 75 roubles. Please take a note, that the prices asked for that forgery were on par with very rare genuine Russian coins. An excellent example of numismatic history with documented big names involved.
