#551 1914 AE medal, silver plated to commemorate Belgian Gratitude for American Generosity by Godefroid Devreese (signed: G.DEVREESE obverse & reverse). Obv: LL. MM. ALBERT - ET ELIZABETH co-joined busts facing left. Rx: GENEROSITE AMERIQUE BELGIQUE - GRATITUDE / 1914 - Columbia gives wheat to Belgian family (much of Belgium's food was provided by a U.S. relief effort headed by future President Herbert Hoover). AU, silver plating did not lay evenly, 35mm, smooth rounded edge. There were definitely difficulties at the mint with silver plating of that particular medal. I have seen several of them with similar problems. XF

#554 1921 Meissen Porcelain medal on Re-establishment of Bishopric of Meissen in 1921. It was originally established in 967, but dissolved by protestants in 1539. Obv. Depicts patron saint of Meissen, Benno and the legend reads Pray for us, holly Benno. 50 mm brown with gilded trimmings and center designs. UNC

East Germany (1946-1990)
#555 1961 Pair of AR medals in original box of issue, commemorating Berlin as Capital f GDR, both have Brandenburg Gate on obverse, but under different angles and both have the same reverse. One medal, of 75.6 gram has Berlin- Capital of GDR on the cartouche over the Brandenburg Gate and the Coat of Arms of GDR with “For the Protection of Workers and Peasants” legend around it. The other, 79.6 gram has the same reverse, but on obverse the legend 13 August 1961 Berlin is Capital of German Democratic Republic. The box has a 105 mm x 145 mm lithograph signed by artist in pencil glued to it and the small plaque with “City Commandant of People’s Army for Capital of GDR, Berlin” below medals. He was caught in Japan, confessed under torture of spying for USSR, but Soviet Union had denied association. Despite triple offer of Japan to trade Sorge for one of their own spies in Soviet custody, USSR had declined it. He was executed and berried in Japan in 1944. #563 1739, November 22, Admiral Vernon Medal. AE medal on Capture of Spanish Portobello fortress-settlement in Panama that protected Spanish gold and silver deliveries to Mainland from Americas. During the war of Austrian Succession, British Admiral Edward Vernon declared that he can capture Portobello with only 6 ships. Only after he was appointed as Commander of Jamaica Station he had the power to try his dare. With the cost of 3 dead and 7 wounded he captured 3 Spanish battleships, the settlement and leveled it to the ground. The Heaven of Antiquarian trade in London, famous antique flee market is located on Portobello road, named after that victory. Obv. depicts Admiral Vernon with THE BRITISH GLORY REVIVE’D BY ADMIRAL VERNON around it and scene of naval battle and legend HE TOOK PORTO BELLO WITH SIX SHIPS ONLY around. #564 1739, November 22, ( 1740) Admiral Vernon Medal. AE medal on Capture of Fort Chagres one of the principal Spanish fortresses on the Atlantic coast in Panama. Three months after capturing Portobello, Vernon came back to Panama attempted to take Cartagena, but failed, then preceded to Castillo De San Lorenzo and Fort Chagres, both key elements in Spanish transfer of precious metals from colonies. Castillo De San Lorenzo surrendered to Vernon who took possession of it together with town of Chagres on March 23, 1740 and after looting rich with merchandise town for a week, Vernon burned them down on March 29. #566 1796 AR hand engraved School Medal for St. Bees School. The school was established in 1583 by Edmund Grindal, Archbishop of Canterbury at the time. #569 1918 AE WWI American Car and Foundry medal. These commemorative medals were awarded to honor "industrial soldiers" who worked on the company's munitions contracts during the Great War. The medal, depicts on one side a workman wielding a hammer to smash a German army helmet with entwined snake on an anvil. In the background we see munitions and a ship. The image is circled by the words "Presented by the American Car and Foundry Company", with 1917-1918 in exergue. The other side of the medal depicts Columbia, carrying a sheaf of grain and staff, advancing into the sunrise, toward the Statue of Liberty in the mid-ground. The inscription reads For Service Faithfully Rendered. Just behind the figure's foot are the medallists initials CB-JK. Incused edge inscription reads Gorham Co. Bronze. #572 1728 WM medal by P.P. Werner, probably cast, on Death of Grand Duchess Natalia Alexeyevna. The original were struck in silver and gold and are very rare and even though it is a copy, the mold was taken from the original and execution is very detailed and accurate. I am having difficulties in figuring out the way it was made. In any case, even as it is, it is deserving of the place in collection and the price.
