#400263 Our Lady of Kazan or The Virgin of Kazan (Бoгoмaтepь Kaзaнcкaя), 19 th century egg tempera icon, in base metal riza, 138 x 114 mm, It is strange to see such a well painted icon in base metal riza. The first original icon of The Virgin of Kazan was discovered in 1579, in the city of Kazan. Ever since 1612, when the icon was brought to lead the troops and the Kremlin was liberated, whenever Russia had to go into battle, the Virgin of Kazan or one of its copies was carried in front of the army. The Virgin of Kazan is one of the most popular subjects in Russian icons.
